The inshore Survey Motor Boat (SMB) ADVENTURE is not a commissioned ship. She is usually operated as a tender from HMNZS RESOLUTION. The aluminium catamaran is small enough to be lifted aboard RESOLUTION for transportation; however she is capable of independent operations and short coastal passages. She is the core of the Navy's Deployable Hydrographic Unit, available for inshore hydrographic tasks on short notice.

ADVENTURE was built in Kumeu, North Auckland, in 1998. A catamaran hull was chosen to give a wide working area aft and to allow the multibeam echo sounder to be retracted between the hulls.

The SMB is fitted with an echo sounder and data can be integrated with the multi beam system fitted in RESOLUTION.
