Oct 25th 2007 - AHSO Greg Carter

AHSO Carter (NIS-10-024).

My name is Greg Carter and I am 19 years old. I originally come from Wairoa in the Hawke’s Bay and was bought up on the farm. I spent my primary school years at a convent in Wairoa before attending Napier Boys High school.

This is where I found out about the Navy through career meetings. As I was not sure of where to go after high school - either going to university and racking up a huge student loan or “living the dream” in the Navy – I made the obvious decision to join the Navy. I joined at the start of 2006 and adapted to the new military lifestyle as an Ordinary Hydrographic Surveyor.  I have now been promoted to be an Able Rate and I am happy with the branch I am in, it seems to be a very good choice.  It brings in money for the Defence force but for unknown reasons it is also the one that gets the most stick from the other branches. Being a drog (short for Hydrographer) consists of two things - land surveying and oceanographic surveying, and I have mostly done oceanographic surveying. In late October 2006 I was posted to HMNZS RESOLUTION to start my real Navy career of riding the high seas. I have been on “Reso” for one year now and I’m loving it. This includes using an echo sounder which pings off the seabed to give us the associated depths. The best part of being on “Reso” is that everyone is active and the regular Sporties are the way to go.

My ambitions for the future are to save money, keep fit and to ‘drog on’ and we’ll see what happens next when it happens.
