Feb 26th 2008 - Lieutenant Dave Berry

Lt Berry RNZN on the bridge (NIS-03-069).

Born in 1978 in Waitara, Taranaki, I moved to the UK with my parents before returning to Auckland in 1993, where I attended Auckland Grammar School and then read Geography and Geology at the University of Auckland. After graduating I had several jobs, including working as a network analyst for Watercare services.

It was during this time that I joined the Naval Reserve, serving for three years before gaining my commission in 2004.  One year later I joined the full time RNZN, and started my career as a Seaman Officer.  Having served on the IPC’s, ENDEAVOUR and TE MANA I now find myself as the Navigating Officer onboard HMNZS RESOLUTION, a job I enjoy immensely, not only for the responsibility of piloting the ship through confined waters but also in the role we play in charting NZ waters and the hydrographic work the ship undertakes.

Certainly on this ship and others I have served on, I find the comradeship and sense of duty generated to be key aspects as to why I am in the Navy.  Onboard Resolution, the shipmates I have had will last me a lifetime, and I have had so many experiences onboard that I will cherish for a very long time.
