I went to Rotorua Lakes High School and that is where I found out about joining the Navy and as I wasn’t the best student in the world, there was no chance of going university so I thought ‘why not’ and I joined as a Steward. I originally thought I would only stay in a couple of years until I got some good qualifications and then leave, but I just love it so much, six years later I’m still in and still loving it.
I joined in 2002 as an Ordinary Steward and my first sea deployment was on HMNZS RESOLUTION and since then I served on HMNZS ENDEAVOUR where I went to South East Asia, the highlights would definitely be when I went to Vladivostok , Shanghai, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and many many more places. After posting off ENDEAVOUR I spent two years alongside working at PHILOMEL Wardroom. After completing my Leading Rates Common Promotion Course I was immediately sent to HMNZS RESOLUTION where I currently work. The highlights on RESOLUTION so far would have to be going to Napier and Gisborne, places I have never been before, and retaining the inter-mess trophy.
My ambitions for the future would be to further my career in the RNZN whilst visiting new and exciting ports around the world earning as many medals as possible and upholding the Navy’s core values of COURAGE COMRADESHIP and COMMITMENT.
One thing the Navy has taught me is KIA KAHA (keep strong).
