Navy Hosts Industry Shop Window onboard HMNZS WELLINGTON
Over fifty representatives from twenty five companies that provide engineering and logistic in-service support to the RNZN participated in a Navy Industry Shop Window on 14 October 2010, onboard the RNZN’s newest Protector Vessel, HMNZS WELLINGTON (Lt Cdr S. Griffiths, RNZN).
The purpose of this Shop Window was to acknowledge the Navy’s maritime community of interest, which includes those original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and key suppliers who contributed to Project Protector and those companies that now continue to provide technical and logistics support to the Navy.
Companies represented on the day included the dockyard manager, key engineering and logistic support providers and those Project Protector OEMs who supplied and now support key equipment such as the Ship’s electrical distribution systems, main engines, air-conditioning systems, communication, and navigation systems. Also represented were a selection of logistics suppliers who provide clothing, food and general consumables in support of wider Defence operations.
Onboard HMNZS WELLINGTON, guests were treated to a number of evolutions by the Ship’s company including a fire-fighting demonstration, a joining from ahead on HMNZS MANAWANUI (LT CDR W. LEEF, RNZN), a ship manoeuvring and handling demonstration, a boarding operation and a man overboard exercise. All guests were given a tour of the Ship, morning tea and the opportunity to meet and discuss ideas and opportunities with RNZN personnel and other members of the maritime community of interest.
Despite the weather initially threatening to be miserable for the morning, the sun did break through and guests enjoyed a spectacular forenoon at sea amongst the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.
Upon arrival at Devonport Naval Base, the Industry representatives were then hosted to lunch by the Logistics Commander (Maritime), Captain John Tucker, RNZN at the HMNZS PHILOMEL Wardroom.
